When new residents move to Friends House Retirement Community they may not need assisted living or skilled nursing home care. But, when that time comes, they know they will be treated like family by qualified, compassionate professionals who respect each individual's -- physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs with warmth, enthusiasm and a smile.

The primary objective of Friends Nursing Home is to provide an atmosphere and environment, in which each resident receives consistent, high quality medical care and attains rehabilitation to their maximum potential. Together, Friends House staff ensures that each and every resident in Skilled or Dementia Care, regardless of independence level, is living every day to their fullest potential, and experiencing an enjoyable quality life. Each fall, students from the Howard Community College Student Nurses Program specifically choose Friends Nursing Home for their first clinical experience, where they sharpen their nursing skills.

Friends Nursing Home provides many services to residents. These services include nutritious, home-cooked meals prepared by our in-house kitchen staff; licensed nursing care twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week; and linen, bedding laundry and housekeeping service. Nursing home staff follows the care consistent with orders from each resident's personal physician, and administers the medications that each resident requires. We also have geriatric aides and a professional social worker on staff to assist in the care of residents.

Resident care planning meetings are held quarterly for all residents with the interdisciplinary team. That team includes the Director of Nursing, Dietitian, Social Worker, Activities Director, Administration and Nursing Staff. Families of residents will have the opportunity to attend those meetings if they so wish.

Friends Nursing Home Activities Department offers a broad program of assisted activities. Residents are involved in programs such as: Current event discussions, movies, games, music therapy, holiday cooking sessions, and off campus luncheons to mention only a few. Special programs are often sponsored by outside church and community visiting groups.

Dining Services

A good diet is important at all ages. Our Dining Services staff provides 3 nutritious meals daily made from wholesome ingredients - that can only be described as homemade. Residents are provided additional snacks throughout the day.

Rehabilitative Services

Friends House offers rehabilitative services including: speech, physical and occupational therapy. Other services include: social services, special diets, and podiatry. Referrals to other specialists, such as dentists, optometrists and geriatrists, are available as needed.

Additional expenses for doctor's fees, dental work, ophthalmology, audiology, orthopedic appliances, x-rays, laboratory work and any other treatment will be billed directly to the resident or guarantor.

Other services are available to residents on a fee-for-service basis. These services include: medications ordered from our pharmacy (not covered by Medicare Part D), beauty and barber services; newspapers, and guest meals for visitors.

"The Friends House staff was sensitive and caring and kept my grandmother comfortable. The loving nurses who coordinated care for my grandmother along with the hospice nurse were always very professional, kind, gentle, and always let me know of her condition and her needs. I appreciate being able to call all hours of the night to check on Nanny. I love you all for being there for her and me." Val Gates
