Skilled Care at Friends House Retirement Community
Friends Nursing Home is a long-term care facility for individuals in need of medical, rehabilitative and hospice care. Friends' follows the principles that are basic to the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) concept of the dignity and intrinsic worth of each person.
Thomas Hall, a state-of-the-art Alzheimer's-Dementia Care Center at Friends Nursing Home, opened in February of 2005, and is one of the few Maryland skilled nursing care facilities designed and built for active confused seniors in need of special dementia care.
Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, a group of conditions that all gradually destroy brain cells and lead to the progressive decline in mental functions. Research has shown that specialized care and support improves the quality of life for individuals and their caregivers over the course of the disease.
Thomas Hall has been designed to provide the highest degree of specialized dementia care through the following means:
- Staffing numbers are at a high level.
- Staff receives on-going dementia care training.
- Activities focus on minimizing anxiety.
- Nature, atmosphere, family environment and home-style dining give a peace to the soul that medicine cannot.
- Large windows and open spaces allow more sunshine which is known to lift spirits.
- Nurses are located in areas designed to keep residents in line of sight.
Stabler Hall at Friends Nursing Home has 4 private rooms and twenty-five semi-private rooms. Each room is equipped with a personal bathroom and a large, lockable wardrobe containing several drawers. Residents are encouraged to bring some of their own furnishings to make them feel more at home. Pictures, a small chest of drawers, a comfortable chair, reading lamp, radio or television are a few suggested items that are often brought by residents. Telephone and cable television services are available in all rooms on a fee-for-service basis. Personal laundry may be taken home and washed by the family, or done by staff in the Friends House Laundry Department.
Friends House offers rehabilitative services including speech, physical and occupational therapy. Other services include social services, special diets, and podiatry.
Other services are available to residents on a fee-for-service basis.
