Open Letter from a Resident

Retirement at Friends House can be the beginning of a new and stimulating phase of your life.  There is much opportunity here to make it an exciting and enriching experience.
If you are in good health and can care for yourself in your apartment, we urge you not to wait too long before joining the Friends House community.  It is this involvement of the residents that makes our community so special.  Although volunteering is entirely by choice, most of us feel drawn to serve in some capacity.
Residents may volunteer as receptionists, tend our little Country Store, staff our Elephant Shop which recycles anything no longer needed by residents, work in our well equipped  machine shop to repair or create items.  Residents participate in the activities of various committees: program, tours, library, art, flower arranging and kitchen garden where we grow almost everything from strawberries and asparagus to corn and winter squash.  Volunteers help in planting, harvesting and preparing the produce for the kitchen.
The quarterly Friends House Letter, produced by residents, is also sent to interested friends.  there is a Writer's group which contributes to our magazine "Gleanings".
We have a play-reading group, sewing group, a monthly birthday dining table, Saturday night forum, Sunday night hymn sing, Monday night movies, etc.  All these groups are initiated by residents.  by volunteering, the cost of Friends House operating is reduced while the quality of life here is greatly enhanced.
You will be welcomed by our friendly and caring staff and the residents who make up our extended family.  Residents come to us from many different fields or expertise and sharing them is what makes Friends House such a unique community.
Please read the literature carefully.  You will find that it answers many questions you may have about life here and requirements for admission.   When you are ready to apply or want more information, please call for an appointment with our Resident Director.  Thank you for your interest in Friends House.
