Application Procedure

Friends House maintains a waiting list of persons already approved for admission.  Prior to admission, all applicants must:

  • Visit Friends House and meet with the Resident Director.
  • Complete an application, stating the month and year when accommodations are preferred.
  • Provide financial information that verifies the applicant's annual income does not exceed the applicable HUD income limits.
  • Qualify physically and mentally for living independently.

Applicants are placed on the waiting list once they have completed all of the eligibility procedures as listed above.   After an application is reviewed by the Admissions Committee, the applicant will begin to receive the "Friends House Letter".  Applicants who have a change of address are required to inform Friends House of the change.

Admissions

Advance notice will be given to an approved applicant as his or her name approaches the top of the waiting list.  An effort will be made to offer an apartment as near the preferred accommodation date as is feasible.  Because it is extremely important to the vitality of community life and volunteer activity, individuals are encouraged to request accommodations at Friends House as early in their retirement years as possible.  Apartment availability is based upon vacancy; therefore no promises of accommodation date can be made.

Friends House does not ask for an application fee or an entrance fee; however, HUD requires a security deposit prior to the applicant's admission to Friends House.  This deposit shall be equal to one month's rent and shall earn interest for the applicant until the termination of the lease.  At that time the security deposit will be returned to the resident or to his or her estate.
